Establishment
The Archdiocese of Fortaleza was erected on 6 June 1854 by Pope Pius IX as the Diocese of Fortaleza, carved from the territory of the Diocese of Olinda. It was elevated to archdiocesan status on 16 February 1952.
History
Early Years
Missionary activity in the region dates to the 17th century with the arrival of Jesuits and other religious orders. The see was created to organize pastoral care amid population growth in the captaincy of Ceará.
Elevation and Expansion
