Established in 1938 by Pope Pius XI, it forms part of the Ecclesiastical Province of Fortaleza and ministers to a largely rural Catholic population across multiple municipalities. The diocese is currently led by Bishop José Maurício da Silva, appointed in 2023. Its mother church is the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption in the city of Quixadá.

Establishment
The Diocese of Quixadá was erected on 8 December 1938 by Pope Pius XI through the apostolic constitution "Quo in Brasiliae", carved from territory previously belonging to the Archdiocese of Fortaleza to better serve the growing Catholic communities in the interior of Ceará.
History
Early Years
Following its establishment, the diocese focused on organizing parishes and building basic infrastructure for worship and education in a region marked by drought and rural isolation. The first bishop, Joaquim de Almeida, oversaw the construction of the initial cathedral and several mission stations.
Modern Era
In subsequent decades the diocese expanded its network of schools and social services while adapting to population shifts caused by migration to coastal cities. It has maintained strong ties to traditional devotional practices centered on Our Lady of the Assumption.

The diocese covers the municipalities of Quixadá, Ibaretama, Quixeramobim, Solonópole, and several surrounding districts in central Ceará.

The Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption in Quixadá serves as the mother church. The present structure dates from the mid-twentieth century and features a simple neoclassical façade typical of regional Brazilian ecclesiastical architecture.
