Establishment
The Diocese of Iguatu was established on 28 August 1964 by Pope Paul VI through the bull "Novae Brasiliae" to serve the growing Catholic population in the interior of Ceará, separating territory from the Archdiocese of Fortaleza and the Diocese of Crato.
History
The diocese was created amid the expansion of the Catholic Church in northeastern Brazil during the mid-20th century. Its first bishop, José Mauro Ramalho de Alencar, was appointed in 1964 and oversaw initial organization of parishes and institutions. Subsequent bishops continued development of pastoral structures in the region.

The diocese covers the municipalities of Iguatu, Acopiara, Baixio, Catarina, Cedro, Icó, Ipaumirim, Jucás, Orós, Quixelô, and Umari in the state of Ceará.
