Establishment
The Archdiocese of Santa Maria was erected as a diocese on 15 August 1954 by Pope Pius XII, carved from territory previously belonging to the Archdiocese of Porto Alegre. It was elevated to the rank of metropolitan archdiocese on 13 April 2011 by Pope Benedict XVI.
History
The territory that now comprises the archdiocese was evangelized beginning in the 19th century by missionaries serving German and Italian immigrant communities. The see city of Santa Maria became an important ecclesiastical center in the interior of Rio Grande do Sul during the 20th century. Elevation to archdiocese in 2011 reflected the pastoral growth and the need for a metropolitan structure to coordinate the surrounding dioceses.

The archdiocese covers a large portion of central Rio Grande do Sul, including the municipalities of Santa Maria, São Pedro do Sul, and numerous surrounding rural parishes.
Mother Church
