Establishment
The Diocese of Santo Ângelo was erected on 22 January 1966 by Pope Paul VI through the bull *Novae Brasiliae Ecclesiae*, carved from territory previously belonging to the Archdiocese of Porto Alegre and the Diocese of Santa Maria.
History
The diocese developed rapidly after its founding to serve expanding Catholic communities in the missions region of Rio Grande do Sul. Its territory has remained stable since erection, with emphasis on rural parishes and formation of local clergy.
