Establishment
The Diocese of Cruz Alta was established on 27 May 1956 by Pope Pius XII through the bull "Quo in Brasiliae", carved from territory previously belonging to the Archdiocese of Porto Alegre and the Diocese of Santa Maria to better serve the growing Catholic communities in western Rio Grande do Sul.
History
The diocese developed rapidly after its founding amid the expansion of agricultural settlements in the region. Early bishops focused on building parishes, schools, and social services to support immigrant families of German, Italian, and Polish descent. Boundary adjustments occurred in later decades as neighboring dioceses were erected, but the see has remained stable since its creation.
Geography
The diocese covers the western portion of Rio Grande do Sul, including the municipalities of Cruz Alta, Ijuí, Santo Ângelo, and surrounding areas. It lies within the Ecclesiastical Province of Santa Maria.
