Establishment
The Archdiocese of San Juan de Puerto Rico was established in 1511 by Pope Julius II as the first diocese in the Americas, initially covering the entire Caribbean region under Spanish colonial administration.
History
Early Years
The see began as the Diocese of Puerto Rico in 1511 and was elevated to archdiocesan status in 1924. It experienced boundary adjustments as new dioceses were erected across the island in the twentieth century.
Geography
The archdiocese covers the northeastern portion of Puerto Rico, including the municipalities of San Juan, Bayamón, Carolina, Trujillo Alto, and surrounding areas. It belongs to the Ecclesiastical Province of San Juan de Puerto Rico.
