The Diocese of Ponce, a suffragan diocese of the Latin Rite, is an active diocese in southern Puerto Rico, United States. Erected on 17 January 1924 by Pope Pius XI, it is led by Bishop Rubén Antonio González Medina since 2014. As part of the Archdiocese of San Juan de Puerto Rico, the diocese encompasses nine municipalities and serves a predominantly Hispanic Catholic population through 49 parishes, with its mother church being the historic Catedral Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe.

Establishment

The Diocese of Ponce was canonically erected on 17 January 1924 by Pope Pius XI through the apostolic constitution Ad regendae Ecclesiae, carving its territory from the Archdiocese of San Juan de Puerto Rico to address the pastoral needs of the growing Catholic population in southern Puerto Rico.[1][2]

History

The diocese was established amid the expansion of the Catholic Church in Puerto Rico following American acquisition of the island in 1898, with boundaries adjusted over time to include municipalities like Ponce, Yauco, and Guánica. Key milestones include the construction of new parishes in the mid-20th century and participation in the Second Vatican Council through its bishops. Boundary changes occurred in 1963 when parts were transferred to the new Diocese of Arecibo.[3][4]

The Diocese of Ponce covers approximately 1,000 square kilometers in southern Puerto Rico, comprising the following nine municipalities:

Mother church

Ponce Cathedral (Catedral Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe) in Ponce serves as the diocese's mother church. This neoclassical structure, originally built in the 17th century and rebuilt after earthquakes in 1918, features twin bell towers and houses the tomb of Blessed Carlos Manuel Rodríguez Santiago.[6]

Rubén Antonio González Medina has served as Bishop of Ponce since 12 November 2014. Ordained a priest in 1985, he previously served as auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of San Juan de Puerto Rico and emphasizes family ministry and vocations.[7]
