Establishment

The Diocese of Caguas was canonically erected on July 4, 1964, by Pope Paul VI through the apostolic constitution Ad pastoralis officii, carved from the territory of the Archdiocese of San Juan de Puerto Rico to address the growing Catholic population in central-eastern Puerto Rico.[1][2]

History

The diocese was created amid post-World War II population growth and urbanization in Puerto Rico, necessitating localized episcopal leadership. Its first bishop, Rafael Grovas Felix, focused on building infrastructure, including parishes and schools. Boundary adjustments occurred minimally, with the diocese maintaining its eastern focus.[3]

In 2019, under Bishop González Medina, the diocese emphasized synodality and youth ministry in response to contemporary challenges like secularization.[4]

Catedral Dulce Nombre de Jesús in Caguas, constructed in the 19th century with neoclassical elements, serves as the diocese's mother church and seat of the bishop. It was elevated to cathedral status upon the diocese's erection in 1964.[6]
