Establishment
The Archdiocese of Porto Alegre was erected on 15 August 1892 by Pope Leo XIII from territory previously part of the Diocese of São Pedro do Rio Grande do Sul.
History
The see developed rapidly in the early twentieth century as European immigration increased the Catholic population of southern Brazil. It was elevated to metropolitan status in 1928.
