Establishment
The Diocese of Novo Hamburgo was erected on 2 February 1980 by Pope John Paul II to serve the expanding Catholic communities in the industrial and urban areas north of Porto Alegre.
History
The territory of the diocese was previously part of the Archdiocese of Porto Alegre. Its creation responded to rapid population growth and the need for more localized pastoral care in the Vale dos Sinos region during the late twentieth century.
Geography
The diocese covers parts of the Vale dos Sinos and surrounding municipalities in Rio Grande do Sul, including the cities of Novo Hamburgo, São Leopoldo, Campo Bom, and several neighboring towns. It belongs to the Ecclesiastical Province of Porto Alegre.
