The Diocese of Montes Claros, a metropolitan archdiocese of the Latin Rite, is an active diocese located in the state of Minas Gerais in Brazil. Erected as a diocese on 10 December 1910 by Pope Pius X and elevated to archdiocesan status on 25 April 2001, it serves as the metropolitan see for several suffragan dioceses in northern Minas Gerais. Establishment

The Archdiocese of Montes Claros was established as the Diocese of Montes Claros on 10 December 1910 by Pope Pius X, carved from territory previously belonging to the Diocese of Diamantina to serve the growing Catholic population in northern Minas Gerais.

History

The see began as a missionary territory in the early twentieth century. It experienced steady growth through the mid-twentieth century with the construction of parishes and schools. On 25 April 2001 it was elevated to the rank of metropolitan archdiocese by Pope John Paul II, gaining suffragan dioceses and assuming its current role within the Brazilian Church.

The archdiocese covers a large portion of northern Minas Gerais, including the municipalities of Montes Claros, Bocaiúva, Francisco Sá, and surrounding areas. It belongs to the Ecclesiastical Province of Montes Claros.
