Establishment
The Diocese of São João del Rei was erected on 5 April 1960 by Pope John XXIII from territory previously belonging to the Archdiocese of Mariana and the Diocese of Juiz de Fora, to better serve the growing Catholic communities in the central-southern region of Minas Gerais.
History
The territory of the diocese has been evangelized since the 18th century during the Brazilian gold rush, with numerous chapels and churches built by Portuguese settlers and enslaved Africans. The see was created to address pastoral needs in the expanding interior, and its first bishop oversaw the construction of the diocesan curia and several new parishes. In recent decades the diocese has focused on preserving its colonial architectural heritage while adapting to contemporary social challenges.

The diocese covers parts of the central-southern region of Minas Gerais, including the municipalities of São João del-Rei, Tiradentes, Resende Costa, Conceição da Barra de Minas, and surrounding areas.
Mother Church
The Cathedral of the Most Holy Sacrament (Catedral Basílica do Santíssimo Sacramento) in São João del-Rei serves as the mother church. Built in the 18th century in Baroque style, it is one of the most important colonial religious monuments in Minas Gerais.
