Establishment
The Archdiocese of Mariana was erected as the Diocese of Mariana on 6 December 1748 by Pope Benedict XIV, carved from territory previously under the Diocese of São Sebastião do Rio de Janeiro, to serve the growing Catholic population in the captaincy of Minas Gerais.
History
The see developed rapidly during the Brazilian gold rush of the eighteenth century. It was elevated to the rank of archdiocese on 1 May 1906 by Pope Pius X. Boundary adjustments occurred in the twentieth century as new dioceses were created from its territory.

The archdiocese covers parts of central Minas Gerais, including the historic city of Mariana and surrounding municipalities.
