Establishment
The Diocese of Itabira-Fabriciano was erected on 14 June 1965 by Pope Paul VI from territory previously part of the Archdiocese of Belo Horizonte to serve the expanding Catholic communities in the iron-mining regions of eastern Minas Gerais.
History
The diocese developed rapidly after its founding amid Brazil's industrial growth in the mid-twentieth century. Its territory was adjusted in 1989 when the name was changed to reflect the inclusion of Fabriciano. The see has focused on pastoral care for mining families and rural populations.

The diocese covers parts of the Vale do Aço and surrounding municipalities in eastern Minas Gerais.
