Establishment
The Diocese of Leopoldina was established on 28 March 1942 by Pope Pius XII, carved from territory previously belonging to the Archdiocese of Juiz de Fora and the Diocese of Mariana to better serve the growing Catholic communities in eastern Minas Gerais.

The region around Leopoldina saw early Catholic evangelization in the 18th and 19th centuries amid Portuguese colonial expansion and later coffee plantation development. The diocese was formally erected in the mid-20th century to address pastoral needs in a rapidly changing rural area.
