Establishment
The Archdiocese of Juiz de Fora was erected on 1 February 1924 by Pope Pius XI, carved from territory previously belonging to the Archdiocese of Mariana to serve the growing Catholic communities in the interior of Minas Gerais.
History
The see began as a diocese focused on pastoral care amid rapid urbanization and immigration in the early twentieth century. It was raised to an archdiocese on 28 November 1964 by Pope Paul VI, becoming the metropolitan see for surrounding suffragan dioceses.
