Archdiocese of Curitiba

Establishment
The Archdiocese of Curitiba was established on 27 April 1892 by Pope Leo XIII to serve the growing Catholic population in the southern region of Brazil, originally as a suffragan of the Archdiocese of São Paulo.
History
Early Years
The see was created amid rapid immigration and settlement in Paraná during the late nineteenth century. The first bishop, José de Camargo Barros, oversaw the construction of the initial cathedral and the organization of parishes.
Elevation to Archdiocese
On 28 October 1926 the diocese was elevated to the rank of archdiocese by Pope Pius XI, becoming the metropolitan see for the ecclesiastical province of Curitiba.

The archdiocese covers the greater metropolitan area of Curitiba and surrounding municipalities in the state of Paraná. It is part of the Ecclesiastical Province of Curitiba.
Mother Church
The Catedral Basílica Menor Nossa Senhora da Luz in Curitiba serves as the mother church. The present neo-Gothic structure was completed in the early twentieth century.
