The Archdiocese of Cascavel, a metropolitan archdiocese of the Latin Rite, is an active diocese located in the state of Paraná in Brazil. Established in 1950 by Pope Pius XII and elevated to archdiocesan status in 1979, it serves as the metropolitan see for its ecclesiastical province. Led by Archbishop José Antônio Peruzzo since 2018, the archdiocese ministers to a growing Catholic community across multiple municipalities in western Paraná.

Establishment

The Archdiocese of Cascavel was erected as a diocese on 20 June 1950 by Pope Pius XII, carved from territory previously belonging to the Diocese of Toledo. It was elevated to the rank of metropolitan archdiocese on 16 October 1979.

History

The see developed rapidly in the mid-twentieth century amid agricultural expansion in western Paraná. Its territory was reduced in 1953, 1959, 1965, 1970 and 1978 to form new dioceses. Elevation to archdiocese in 1979 made it the metropolitan see for several suffragan dioceses in the region.
