Establishment
The Archdiocese of Botucatu was erected as a diocese on 7 June 1923 by Pope Pius XI, carved from territory previously belonging to the Archdiocese of São Paulo. It was elevated to the rank of metropolitan archdiocese on 19 April 1964 by Pope Paul VI.
History
The see developed rapidly in the early twentieth century amid agricultural expansion in the interior of São Paulo state. Key milestones include the construction of its cathedral and the establishment of several suffragan dioceses as the Catholic population grew. The archdiocese has maintained a steady focus on seminary formation and rural evangelization.
Geography
