Establishment
The Diocese of Assis was erected on 30 November 1960 by Pope John XXIII through the bull "Novarum Ecclesiarum", carved from territory previously belonging to the Archdiocese of Botucatu to better serve the growing Catholic communities in western São Paulo state.
