Establishment
The Archdiocese of Belo Horizonte was erected on 11 February 1906 by Pope Pius X, carved from territory previously belonging to the Archdiocese of Mariana. It was created to meet the pastoral needs of the rapidly growing population in the central region of Minas Gerais following the establishment of the new state capital.
History
The archdiocese developed alongside the expansion of Belo Horizonte as Brazil's first planned modern city. Key milestones include the construction of the Cathedral of Our Lady of Good Voyage in the 1920s and its elevation to metropolitan status in 1963.
