Establishment
The Diocese of Sete Lagoas was erected on 16 February 1959 by Pope John XXIII through the bull "Cum Venerabilis Frater", carved from territory previously belonging to the Archdiocese of Belo Horizonte and the Diocese of Montes Claros to better serve the growing Catholic communities in northern Minas Gerais.
History
Early Years
Following its creation, the diocese focused on organizing parishes and establishing basic Catholic infrastructure in a region marked by agricultural communities and mining activities. The first bishop oversaw the construction of the initial cathedral and numerous chapels.
Modern Era
In subsequent decades, the diocese expanded its educational and charitable works while adapting to urbanization around the city of Sete Lagoas. Boundary adjustments occurred in 2003 when portions of its territory were transferred to the newly created Diocese of Divinópolis.
