Saint Leopold III (German: Leopold der Heilige; c. 1073 – 15 November 1136), called the Good or the Pious, was Margrave of Austria from 1095 to 1136 and a member of the House of Babenberg.[1] Born to Emperor Henry IV’s godson Leopold II and Ida of Formbach-Ratelnberg, he succeeded his father at age 22 and governed with justice, founding monasteries (Klosterneuburg 1114, Heiligenkreuz 1133, Seitenstetten 1112) and mediating between Church and Empire during the Investiture Controversy.[2] Married to Agnes of Germany (widow of Frederick I of Swabia and mother of Conrad III), he fathered 18 children, including Bishop Otto of Freising and Duke Henry II Jasomirgott.
Canonized on 6 January 1485 by Pope Innocent VIII after miracles at his tomb, Leopold was never formally beatified; his cult was confirmed by ancient veneration and papal recognition.[3] His feast day is 15 November. Patron of Austria, Lower Austria, Vienna, death of children, and large families, he is buried in Klosterneuburg Abbey.

Birth
Saint Leopold III was born c. 1073 at Melk or Gars am Kamp, Lower Austria, to Leopold II and Ida of Formbach-Ratelnberg.[4]
Early Life
Raised in piety, Leopold succeeded his father in 1095.
Occupation
Margrave of Austria 1095–1136.
Vocation
Leopold’s royal vocation combined just governance with monastic patronage; he wore the Franciscan cord and died in prayer.
Death
Saint Leopold died peacefully on 15 November 1136 at Klosterneuburg Abbey, aged c. 63.[5]
