Saint Enda
Saint Enda (also: Éanna; born c. 450 AD in Leinster, Ireland; died c. 530 AD on Inis Mór, Aran Islands, Ireland) was an Irish monk who founded the first great monastery of Ireland on Inis Mór (Inishmore), the largest of the Aran Islands off the west coast of Galway. His monastery of Killeany (Cill Éinne) became the school of the Irish saints — Saint Ciaran of Clonmacnoise, Saint Brendan of Clonfert, Saint Columba, and many others trained there. He is called the Father of Irish Monasticism. His feast day is March 21.

Biography
Enda was born a prince of Leinster around 450 AD. He was a soldier and warrior king until his sister Saint Fanchea (foundress of a convent at Rossory) persuaded him to give up his military career and embrace the monastic life. He went to study at a monastery in Scotland under Saint Ninian or (in other accounts) under Mansuetus at Candida Casa, and returned to Ireland ordained and filled with a desire to found a great monastery.
Around 480 AD he obtained the Aran Islands from King Aengus of Munster and established his monastery of Killeany (Cill Éinne — Church of Enda) on Inis Mór. The rule he imposed was one of the strictest in the Irish church, emphasizing manual labor, fasting, and night prayer. The isolation of the islands made them the Irish equivalent of the Egyptian desert — a place removed from the world for intense contemplation.
His monastery became the nursery of Irish saints. The list of those who trained under Enda or sought his blessing is extraordinary:
- Saint Ciaran of Clonmacnoise — spent time at Aran before founding his great monastery at Clonmacnoise on the Shannon
- Saint Brendan of Clonfert — the navigator-saint; visited Enda before his legendary Atlantic voyages
- Saint Columba — possibly spent time at Aran; certainly drew on the tradition Enda had established
- Saint Kevin of Glendalough, Saint Jarlath of Tuam, and many others
Over a hundred saints are said to be buried on Inis Mór, which was called Aran of the Saints. The island became one of the most sacred places in Celtic Christianity, drawing pilgrims through the Middle Ages to the present day.
Enda died around 530 AD and is buried at Killeany. His feast day is March 21.
