Sts. Brendan and Jude is a territorial parish of the Diocese of Buffalo, located on Lower College Drive in Alfred, New York, within Allegany County. Dedicated jointly to Saint Brendan, the sixth-century Irish monastic voyager, and Saint Jude, the apostle traditionally invoked as the patron of hopeless causes, the parish also functions as the Catholic campus ministry serving students of Alfred State College and Alfred University.

The parish was formed through the 1992 merger of two earlier Alfred-area congregations: St. Brendan, established in 1949, and St. Jude, established in 1959.[1] Today the parish worships at the St. Jude Chapel on the Alfred State College campus, with the former St. Brendan site in nearby Almond serving as an oratory.[2]

Sts. Brendan and Jude is administratively linked with Immaculate Conception Parish in Wellsville and other nearby communities as part of "The Catholic Communities of South Eastern Allegany County," and lies within the Diocese of Buffalo's Southern Tier East Vicariate.[3]

History

The Catholic community in Alfred traces to St. Brendan Parish, founded in 1949 to serve Catholic families in the village of Alfred and neighboring Almond.[4] A decade later, in 1959, St. Jude Parish was established in Alfred, closely tied from its founding to the growing Catholic student population at what became Alfred State College and Alfred University.[5]

In 1992, the Diocese of Buffalo merged the two parishes into a single entity, Sts. Brendan and Jude, reflecting a broader pattern of parish consolidation across rural Allegany County as diocesan and demographic pressures reduced the number of priests and worshippers available to sustain separate parishes.[6] Following the merger, the former St. Jude building on Lower College Drive—situated on the Alfred State College campus—became the parish's primary worship site, while the former St. Brendan church in Almond continued to serve as a secondary oratory.[7]

Because of its location on the Alfred State College campus, the parish has long doubled as a center of Catholic campus ministry, hosting the Alfred Newman Club, which serves students from both Alfred State College and Alfred University with regular Sunday and weekday Masses and student-focused faith formation.[8]

In more recent diocesan restructuring under the Diocese of Buffalo's "Road to Renewal" planning process, Sts. Brendan and Jude was grouped into a Family of Parishes alongside Immaculate Conception in Wellsville and Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph, with diocesan planners recommending a further merger with Immaculate Conception; under that recommendation the Almond oratory site would close while the Alfred worship site would remain open.[9]
