Most Precious Blood is a territorial parish of the Diocese of Buffalo, located at 22 Prospect Street in Angola, New York, a village in Erie County. Dedicated to the Most Precious Blood of Jesus Christ, the parish serves the Catholic community along the Lake Erie shoreline south of the city of Buffalo.
Founded in 1871, Most Precious Blood is one of the older parishes in the diocese, tracing its roots to Catholic settlers who arrived in the Angola area around 1850. History
According to the parish's own history, the first Catholic settlers arrived in the Angola area around 1850. In these early years, Mass was said only occasionally, celebrated in the homes of Catholic families whenever a priest from Dunkirk or Buffalo passed through the area. From 1850 to 1870, the spiritual needs of these Catholic residents were attended to primarily by the Passionist Fathers of Dunkirk.[3]
By 1870, the growing number of Catholics in the area led Bishop Stephen Ryan, the second bishop of the Diocese of Buffalo, to appoint Father Thomas Ledwith as the first resident pastor of Most Precious Blood. An abandoned schoolhouse was purchased and converted into a church, and the parish of the Most Precious Blood was formally established in 1871. The first baptism recorded in the newly formed parish took place on March 26, 1871, and Bishop Ryan confirmed 52 persons at the parish's first celebration of Confirmation on July 9, 1871.[3][4]
As the parish community continued to grow, plans were made for a larger, permanent church building, and a new brick structure was dedicated in 1897.[3] The parish has continued to serve the Angola community into the twenty-first century, marking its sesquicentennial in 2021 and today operating as part of the Lakeshore Catholic Faith Community alongside neighboring parishes.[3]
