Establishment

The Diocese of Santa Clara was established on 1 July 1995 by Pope John Paul II to better serve the Catholic faithful in central Cuba.

History

The territory of the diocese was previously part of the Archdiocese of Santiago de Cuba and the Diocese of Cienfuegos. Its creation reflected efforts to reorganize ecclesiastical structures following changes in Cuba's political and social landscape in the late twentieth century.
