The Archdiocese of Camagüey, a metropolitan see of the Latin Rite, is an active archdiocese in central-eastern Cuba. It was erected as a diocese in 1912 and raised to metropolitan archdiocese status in 1995 by Pope John Paul II. The archdiocese serves as the metropolitan see for the Ecclesiastical Province of Camagüey and is currently led by Archbishop Wilfredo Pino Estévez, appointed in 2019. It maintains a significant pastoral presence amid Cuba’s historically Protestant and secular context.
Establishment
The Archdiocese of Camagüey was established on 10 June 1912 as the Diocese of Camagüey by Pope Pius X, carved from territory previously belonging to the Archdiocese of Santiago de Cuba. It was elevated to the rank of metropolitan archdiocese on 5 December 1995.
History
The see developed steadily through the twentieth century, with its territory reduced in 1971 to create the Diocese of Ciego de Ávila. Elevation to archdiocese in 1995 created the current Ecclesiastical Province of Camagüey.
