Establishment
The Diocese of San Carlos de Ancud was erected on 1 July 1840 by Pope Gregory XVI to serve the growing Catholic population in the southern regions of Chile, including the Chiloé Archipelago.
History
The diocese traces its roots to early missionary efforts in the 16th century among the Huilliche and Chono peoples. It experienced significant development in the 19th century with the construction of its cathedral and expansion of parishes. Boundary adjustments occurred in the 20th century to align with the creation of the Ecclesiastical Province of Puerto Montt.
