Diocese of São Carlos
The Diocese of São Carlos, a suffragan diocese of the Latin Rite, is an active diocese in the Brazilian state of São Paulo. Erected on 7 June 1908 by Pope Pius X, it forms part of the Ecclesiastical Province of Campinas and serves a predominantly rural and agricultural population. Establishment
The Diocese of São Carlos was established on 7 June 1908 by Pope Pius X through the apostolic constitution "Supremae dispositionis", carved from territory previously belonging to the Archdiocese of São Paulo to serve the growing Catholic population in the interior of São Paulo state.
History
Early Years
The diocese began with limited infrastructure, relying on missionary priests to minister to scattered farming communities. Its first bishop, José Marcondes Homem de Melo, oversaw the construction of the initial cathedral and the organization of parishes.
20th Century Development
Throughout the twentieth century the diocese expanded its network of schools and hospitals while adapting to rapid urbanization in parts of its territory. Boundary adjustments occurred in 1952 and 1974 to accommodate population growth.

Mother Church
The Cathedral of São Carlos Borromeo in São Carlos serves as the mother church. The present neo-Gothic structure was completed in 1935 and houses the diocesan curia.

Bishop Paulo Sérgio Machado has served as bishop since 2016. A native of the region, he previously served as an auxiliary bishop in the Archdiocese of São Paulo.
