Establishment
The Archdiocese of Campinas was established on 7 June 1908 by Pope Pius X to serve the growing Catholic population in the Campinas region of São Paulo state, initially as a suffragan diocese of the Archdiocese of São Paulo.
History
Early Years
The see was created from territory previously under the Archdiocese of São Paulo to address pastoral needs in the expanding coffee-growing areas of interior São Paulo.
Elevation to Archdiocese
In 1958 the diocese was elevated to the rank of archdiocese by Pope Pius XII, becoming a metropolitan see with several suffragan dioceses assigned to it.
