Diocese of Osorno

Establishment
The Diocese of Osorno was established on 15 November 1955 by Pope Pius XII from territory previously belonging to the Diocese of Valdivia and the Archdiocese of Puerto Montt to better serve the growing Catholic population in the Osorno area.
History
The territory of the diocese has roots in early missionary activity by Spanish Franciscans and Jesuits in the 16th and 17th centuries. It experienced steady growth through the 20th century with the establishment of parishes and schools. No major boundary changes have occurred since its erection.
