Establishment
The Diocese of Osório was erected on 10 November 1999 by Pope John Paul II from territory previously belonging to the Archdiocese of Porto Alegre and the Diocese of Caxias do Sul, to better serve the Catholic faithful in the coastal and northern areas of Rio Grande do Sul.
History
The diocese was created to address the pastoral needs of a rapidly developing region that includes both agricultural communities and growing tourist areas along the Brazilian coast. Since its establishment, it has focused on forming new parishes and strengthening Catholic education and social services.
