Establishment
The Diocese of Oruro was erected on 11 October 1924 by Pope Pius XI, separating territory from the Archdiocese of La Paz to serve the growing Catholic population in the mining regions of western Bolivia.
History
The territory of the diocese has roots in the early evangelization of the Andean highlands following the Spanish conquest. The see was created to address pastoral needs in the Oruro mining district, which experienced significant population growth in the early twentieth century. Boundary adjustments occurred in later decades as new dioceses were formed in neighboring areas.
