Establishment
The Diocese of Crato was erected on 10 March 1914 by Pope Pius X through the papal bull "Catholicae Religionis Incrementum", carved from territory previously belonging to the Archdiocese of Fortaleza to better serve the growing Catholic communities in the interior of Ceará.
History
The diocese developed rapidly in the early twentieth century amid missionary efforts to evangelize the sertão region. Key milestones include the construction of its cathedral and the expansion of parishes during the mid-twentieth century. It has remained stable without suppression or major boundary changes since its founding.

The diocese covers the southern portion of Ceará, including the municipalities of Crato, Juazeiro do Norte, Barbalha, and surrounding areas in the Cariri region.
