Establishment

The Diocese of Camaçari was erected on 25 September 2024 by Pope Francis through the apostolic constitution *Cum in Brasilia*, carving territory from the Archdiocese of São Salvador da Bahia to better serve the faithful in the industrial and coastal areas of northern Bahia.

History

Early Years

The territory now comprising the diocese formed part of the historic Archdiocese of São Salvador da Bahia, one of the oldest sees in the Americas, dating to the sixteenth century. Rapid population growth and economic expansion in Camaçari prompted the Holy See to create a new local church in 2024.

Geography

The diocese covers municipalities in northern Bahia, including Camaçari, Dias d'Ávila, and surrounding coastal and industrial zones. It belongs to the Ecclesiastical Province of São Salvador da Bahia.

The provisional mother church is the Parish Church of Saint Anthony in Camaçari, pending construction of a dedicated cathedral.
