Establishment
The Archdiocese of São Salvador da Bahia was erected on 25 February 1551 by Pope Julius III as the Diocese of São Salvador da Bahia, carved from the vast missionary territories of the Portuguese colony. It became the first episcopal see in the Americas and was later raised to the status of archdiocese on 16 November 1676.
History
Early Years
Missionary activity began with the arrival of Portuguese Jesuits in the 1540s. The first bishop, Dom Pedro Fernandes Sardinha, was consecrated in 1552 and focused on organizing parishes among indigenous populations and early settlers.
Elevation and Growth
Following its promotion to archdiocese, the see oversaw the expansion of Catholicism across northeastern Brazil, including the construction of the Basilica Cathedral of Salvador in the 17th century.
