Diocese of Barra do Garças

The Diocese of Barra do Garças, a suffragan diocese of the Latin Rite, is an active diocese located in the state of Mato Grosso in Brazil. It was established on 27 February 1982 by Pope John Paul II to serve the growing Catholic population in the eastern region of the state. As part of the Ecclesiastical Province of Cuiabá, the diocese ministers to a vast territory that includes rural and indigenous communities. Its mother church is the Cathedral of the Divine Holy Spirit in the city of Barra do Garças.

Establishment

The Diocese of Barra do Garças was erected on 27 February 1982 by Pope John Paul II from territory previously belonging to the Archdiocese of Cuiabá and the Diocese of Diamantino.

History

The diocese was created to address pastoral needs in the expanding eastern portion of Mato Grosso. Its territory includes areas that experienced significant population growth due to agricultural development in the late twentieth century.

Geography

The diocese covers a large area of eastern Mato Grosso, including the municipalities of Barra do Garças, General Carneiro, and surrounding regions. It forms part of the Ecclesiastical Province of Cuiabá.
