Erected as a diocese in 1826 by Pope Leo XII and elevated to archdiocesan rank in 1910, it serves as the metropolitan see for the Ecclesiastical Province of Cuiabá. Establishment
The Archdiocese of Cuiabá was established on 6 December 1826 by Pope Leo XII as the Diocese of Cuiabá, carved from the vast territory of the Archdiocese of São Salvador da Bahia to serve the growing Catholic population in the interior of Brazil.
History
The see began as a missionary outpost in the 18th century before formal erection. It was elevated to the rank of archdiocese on 10 March 1910. Boundary adjustments occurred throughout the 20th century as new suffragan dioceses were created from its territory.

The archdiocese covers a large portion of the state of Mato Grosso, including the capital city of Cuiabá and surrounding municipalities.
