Establishment
The Diocese of Alajuela was established on 16 February 1921 by Pope Benedict XV to serve the expanding Catholic communities in the central valley and northwestern areas of Costa Rica, carved from territory previously under the Archdiocese of San José de Costa Rica.
History
Early Years
Following its erection, the diocese focused on organizing parishes and establishing educational institutions amid Costa Rica's early twentieth-century development.
Modern Era
In subsequent decades the diocese expanded its network of schools and social services while maintaining close ties to the national Church and responding to population growth in Alajuela Province.

Mother Church
Cathedral of Our Lady of the Pillar in Alajuela serves as the mother church, a neoclassical structure completed in the nineteenth century and elevated to cathedral status in 1921.
