Establishment
The Archdiocese of San José de Costa Rica traces its origins to the Diocese of San José de Costa Rica, erected on 10 March 1851 by Pope Pius IX from territory previously under the Diocese of León in Nicaragua. It was elevated to the status of archdiocese on 16 February 1921.
History
The see developed alongside the growth of the Catholic Church in independent Costa Rica during the nineteenth century. Key milestones include the construction of the Metropolitan Cathedral and the expansion of parishes in the capital and surrounding valleys. In the twentieth century, the archdiocese oversaw the creation of several suffragan dioceses as the Catholic population increased.
Geography
The archdiocese covers the central part of Costa Rica, primarily within San José Province and adjacent areas of Heredia and Alajuela provinces. It forms the metropolitan province that includes the seven suffragan dioceses covering the remainder of the country.
Mother Church
The Metropolitan Cathedral of San José, located in the historic center of San José, serves as the mother church. The current structure dates from the nineteenth century and features neoclassical architecture.
