Blessed Conrad of Seldenbüren
Blessed Conrad of Seldenbüren (German: Konrad von Sellenbüren; died May 2, 1126 AD in Zurich, Switzerland) was a Swiss nobleman who founded the Benedictine abbey of Engelberg in central Switzerland and endowed it with his lands. He was killed at Zurich while defending the rights and property of his foundation and has been venerated as a Blessed and martyr for the abbey. His feast day is May 2.
A lord of the region of the Reuss valley, Conrad gave up his patrimony to establish Engelberg Abbey around 1120, becoming himself a lay brother there. When the abbey's possessions were disputed, he traveled to Zurich to defend them and was slain by his adversaries.

Biography
Conrad of Seldenbüren was a nobleman of central Switzerland in the late eleventh and early twelfth centuries. Moved by devotion, he resolved to dedicate his patrimony to God by founding a monastery. Around the year 1120 he established the Benedictine abbey of Engelberg in the valley of the Aa, giving it his lands and possessions. He himself entered the community as a lay brother, serving the monastery he had founded.
The endowment of Engelberg brought Conrad into conflict with others who laid claim to some of the abbey's property. In defense of the rights of his foundation he went to Zurich, where his opponents set upon him and killed him on May 2, 1126.
Because he died in defense of his monastery and its rights, Conrad has long been venerated as a Blessed and regarded as a martyr for the abbey. His remains were brought to Engelberg, which continues to honor him as its founder. His feast is kept on May 2.
