Establishment
The Archdiocese of San Juan de Cuyo was established on 2 March 1834 by Pope Gregory XVI as the Diocese of San Juan de Cuyo, carved from territory previously under the Diocese of Córdoba. It was elevated to the rank of archdiocese on 20 April 1934 by Pope Pius XI.
History
Early Years
Missionary activity in the region dates to the 16th century with the arrival of Spanish settlers and Franciscan friars. The see was formally erected to serve the growing Catholic population in the Cuyo provinces.
