Establishment
The Diocese of San Luis was erected on 20 June 1939 by Pope Pius XII through the apostolic constitution "Ad curam animarum", carved from territory previously belonging to the Archdiocese of Córdoba and the Diocese of San Juan de Cuyo to better serve the growing Catholic population in the interior of Argentina.
History
The territory that now comprises the diocese saw early evangelization by Jesuit and Franciscan missionaries in the 16th and 17th centuries. The see was formally established in the 20th century amid population growth and the need for localized pastoral governance. Key developments include the construction of the cathedral and the expansion of parishes during the mid-20th century.
