Establishment
The Archdiocese of Ribeirão Preto was established on 7 June 1908 by Pope Pius X as the Diocese of Ribeirão Preto, carved from the territory of the Diocese of São Paulo to serve the expanding Catholic population in the coffee-growing regions of western São Paulo state.
History
The see was created to address pastoral needs in a rapidly developing agricultural area. It was elevated to the rank of metropolitan archdiocese on 19 April 1958 by Pope Pius XII. The archdiocese has since overseen the creation of several suffragan dioceses as the Catholic population grew.
