Establishment
The Archdiocese of Port-au-Prince was erected on 3 October 1861 by Pope Pius IX as the Diocese of Port-au-Prince, carved from the territory of the former Apostolic Vicariate of Haiti. It was elevated to the rank of metropolitan archdiocese on 25 February 1898.
History
The see developed rapidly in the late nineteenth century with the construction of its cathedral. It endured the 2010 earthquake, which severely damaged the cathedral and many parishes, prompting extensive rebuilding efforts supported by international Catholic aid.

The archdiocese covers the Ouest department of Haiti, including the capital city of Port-au-Prince and surrounding communes.
Mother Church
Cathédrale Notre-Dame de l'Assomption in Port-au-Prince serves as the mother church. The Gothic Revival structure, originally completed in the nineteenth century, suffered major damage in the 2010 earthquake and remains under restoration.
