Establishment
The Diocese of Port-de-Paix was erected on 3 April 1972 by Pope Paul VI to serve the growing Catholic population in the northwestern part of Haiti, taking territory from the Archdiocese of Cap-Haïtien.
History
The territory that now comprises the diocese was evangelized from the sixteenth century onward as part of the broader missionary activity in Saint-Domingue. After Haitian independence, the area remained under the jurisdiction of the Archdiocese of Cap-Haïtien until the erection of the new diocese in 1972.

The diocese covers the entire Nord-Ouest department of Haiti, including the arrondissements of Port-de-Paix, Saint-Louis-du-Nord, and Mole-Saint-Nicolas.
