Establishment
The Archdiocese of Paraíba (João Pessoa) was erected on 27 July 1864 by Pope Pius IX, carved from the territory of the Diocese of Olinda.
History
The see originated as a missionary effort in the 19th century amid Brazil's expanding Catholic presence in the Northeast. It was elevated to archdiocesan rank in 1914.
