Establishment

The Diocese of Guarabira was established on 12 July 2000 by Pope John Paul II through the apostolic constitution "Cum ad aptius" to better serve the growing Catholic communities in the interior of Paraíba, taking territory from the Archdiocese of Paraíba.

History

The diocese was created to address pastoral needs in the rural regions of Paraíba following the expansion of the Catholic Church in northeastern Brazil during the late twentieth century. Since its erection, it has focused on establishing parishes and promoting evangelization in areas previously served directly by the metropolitan see.

Geography

The diocese covers portions of the state of Paraíba in northeastern Brazil. It is part of the Ecclesiastical Province of Paraíba.

The mother church of the diocese is the Cathedral of Saint Michael in Guarabira.
